Who Are the Children in Foster Care?

Kids from all walks of life end up in care, for many different reasons.

However, these kids are more likely:

  • to be older
  • to be members of a minority group
  • to be a set of siblings
  • to be a survivor of abuse or neglect.

Other interesting facts from the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services’ reports done in 2005:

  • In FY 2002, the average age of a child in care was 10.2 years.
  • That same year, the average age of children adopted was 7.0 years.
  • A disproportionate number of children in care were children of color, as well.
